About Lake Oconee

Lake Oconee is Georgia's second largest lake with over 374 miles of shoreline and a surface area of 18,971 acres. Formed by Georgia Power's creation of Wallace Dam in 1979, Lake Oconee is fed by the Oconee and Appalachee rivers.

The Peninsula on Lake Oconee

One of the most attractive features of Lake Oconee is that the water level rarely fluctuates more than 18 inches. This is because Georgia Power generates hydro-electric energy by pumping water between Lake Oconee and its sister lake, Sinclair.

Oconee is the Creek Indian word meaning "great waters." The Creek Indian's inhabited much of what is now Lake Oconee and it is not uncommon to find artifacts along its shores.

Lake Oconee is also well-known for its fishing, water skiing and especially its golf courses.
